Evelyn Lenton, born Evelyne Verrecchia and known early in her career as Evy, has passed away at the age of 80. As the charismatic lead singer of the disco trio Belle Epoque, she helped shape the sound of late 1970's European dance music with unforgettable hits such as Black Is Black and Miss Broadway. Her vibrant voice, stage presence, and artistic versatility left a lasting mark on the international music scene. She died on 22nd April 2026, leaving behind a legacy cherished by fans across generations.
Evelyn Lenton (born 16 December 1945 in Angers, France - died 22 April 2026) began her musical journey in the early 1960s under the stage name Evy, recording French pop, rock, and yéyé songs that quickly gained attention. She built a solid career in France and Italy, performing in multiple languages and sharing stages with major acts of the era. Her international breakthrough came in 1976, when she became the lead singer of the Paris based disco trio Belle Epoque, created by producer Albert Verrecchia. With fellow vocalists Giusy Fortes and Marcia Briscoe, she achieved major European success. Their 1977 disco remake of Black Is Black reached the top of charts across Europe, including No. 2 in the UK, and became a No. 1 hit in Australia. In the United States, Miss Broadway gained recognition on R&B and disco charts. After Belle Epoque disbanded in 1979, Lenton continued her solo career, releasing new music and collaborating on remixes of her classic hits. Her artistic life spanned more than four decades, marked by constant reinvention and a deep connection to the evolution of European pop and disco.
